June 4, 2002  Scripps Memorial Hospital

Seven hospitals, including Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla California, have agreed to pay over $6.3 Million Dollars to settle claims asserted in a qui tam action filed by Kevin Cosens, a former medical device salesman. The allegations of the case were that the hospitals had violated the False Claims Act by unlawfully charging the government for surgical procedures using experimental cardiac devices.

As part of the settlement Mr. Cosens will receive more than $1 Million Dollars for having filed the qui tam action.
