Shell Oil has agreed to pay $56 Million Dollars to settle allegations that it underpaid royalties owed on natural gas produced under leases it received from the federal government. The Department of Justice intervened in several qui tam lawsuits filed by private parties under the False Claims Act, within which it was alleged that a number of oil companies, including Shell, had systematically undervalued their natural gas production from federal leases.
